Internal swelling reactions in concrete mechanisms and condition assessment
Internal Swelling Reactions in Concrete: Mechanisms and Condition Assessment by Dr. Leandro F. M. Sanchez, looks at deterioration caused by internal swelling reaction mechanisms in concrete such as alkali-aggregate reaction, delayed ettringite formation, and freeze-thaw cycles.
Dr. Leandro F. M. Sanchez
Associate Professor, Civil Engineering (University of Ottawa)
Dr. Sanchez’ expertise is related to the development of sustainable concrete materials and concrete durability, especially the diagnosis and prognosis of concrete affected by Internal Swelling Reactions (ISR).
About the book
Internal Swelling Reactions in Concrete: Mechanisms and Condition Assessment by Dr. Leandro F. M. Sanchez covers recent work on common ISR mechanisms leading to induced expansion and deterioration, outlining qualitative and quantitative techniques to assess condition of affected concrete and the multi-level assessment protocol, using advanced microscopic and mechanical techniques such as the stiffness damage test and damage rating index. It includes a case study of the Robert-Bourassa Charest Overpass in Quebec and suits undergraduate and graduate students, academics, engineers, and infrastructure owners.
About the author
Dr. Sanchez has co-authored over 120 refereed publications on these topics and contributed to the development of standard test protocols, along with descriptive, empirical and numerical models for the design and assessment of concrete. Dr. Sanchez is an active participant on several national and international committees related to concrete sustainability and durability and is currently the deputy chair of the RILEM TC AAR - Alkali-aggregate mitigation in concrete. Dr. Sanchez is a reviewer for a number of important journals in the field and is a recipient of highly prestigious awards such as VANIER PhD scholarship (2010), NSERC Early Career Research Award (2016), NFRF-Exploration grant (2019), and the distinguished Ministry of Ontario Early Research Award (ERA) in 2021.
Special thanks
I want to extend my deepest thanks to the incredible students who played a vital role in bringing this book to life. Special thanks to Cassandra Trottier, Rennan Medeiros da Silva, and Ana Bergmann for their dedication, hard work, and invaluable contributions. I also wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to my research group, uStructure Research Group, for their unwavering support and collaboration throughout this journey. A special thanks goes to my family, especially my beloved wife, whose love, patience, and encouragement have been my greatest source of strength. This book would not have been possible without each of you.
